Team Schut are repeat Boy’s winners, Lauren Ferguson team are Girl’s Runners-up in Halifax U18 Harvest Spiel

The Mitchell Schut team from the Cornwall Curling Club are repeat Under 18 Harvest Spiel Boy’s champions, winning this year’s championship game this afternoon at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax by a 9-6 score against the Nick Mosher foursome from Halifax.

Playing with Schut are Chase MacMillan, who throws fourth stones, second Cruz Pineau, and lead stone Liam Kelly, with coach Pat Quilty. Team Schut finished the 8-team event with a 4-2 win-loss record. All other entries were from Nova Scotia.

A 9-3 Saturday afternoon win put Team Schut with a 2-2 win-loss record, into the 9:15 am semi-finals  The PEI rink won that game 9-1 in six ends against Ryan Smith of Halifax.

Meanwhile, PEI native Lauren Ferguson, now curling out of the Halifax Curling Club, and skipping a team in which includes Cate Fitzgerald from her U21 rink (which is skipped by Taylour Stevens), had to settle for the silver medal in the U18 Girl’s division. Ferguson, attending university in Halifax, advanced to the Sunday morning Girls’ semis, sporting a 3-1 win-loss record. Ferguson won that game 6-2 over Allyson MacNutt of Truro, but lost the close final in the 12-team event by a 7-5 score against Celia Evans of Oromocto NB, when Evans stole a deuce in the final end.
