Team Schut wins Pepsi Junior Men’s, Jr. Womens’ Deciding game moved up to 2 pm

The Mitchell Schut rink, helped by a 5-point sixth end, beat their Cornwall clubmates the Brayden Snow team 10-4 in eight ends on Sunday to win the Pepsi Provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championship at the Silver Fox Curling Club in Summerside. Team Schut had won two modified triple knockout draw sections to Snow’s one, and could win the championship with either Championship Round game today, while Snow would have had to win both, so the second game is not needed. The teams were tied 3-all at the 5th end break, until Schut, with last rock advantage, recorded the 5-ender.

Snow Finalist rink, left to right: Brayden Snow (skip), Jack MacFadyen (3rd), David MacFadyen (coach), Liam Barbrick (2nd), Davis Nicholson (Lead)

During the Junior Men’s closing ceremonies, the junior men’s Sportsmanship award, as voted on by players and officials, and Coaching award, voted on by their coaching peers, were presented by Curl PEI Secretary Jane DiCarlo, with Jack MacFadyen from Team Snow winning the Sportsmanship award, and Team Schut coach Pat Quilty taking the Coaching honours.

The Junior Women will play again at 2 pm (new time) after the Katie Shaw foursome beat their Cornwall clubmates the Rachel MacLean team 10-2 in seven ends in their first Championship Round game on Sunday. MacLean had won two of the three qualifying games and a win would have given her the title, but a deciding game will now take place.  A Shaw 4-ender in the seventh put the game out of reach for MacLean.

The winning Mitchell Schut Junior Men’s team, and the Junior Women’s championship team will each receive training time with Curl PEI Performance Director Peter Gallant as well as a keepsake gift.  The Canadian Junior Championships have been cancelled this year.
