Daryl MacDonald wins Men's Eight Year Championship
The last event in the PEI championship curling season wrapped up Sunday evening, with Daryl MacDonald from the Maple Leaf club in O'Leary winning the Men's Provincial Eight Year and Under Championships at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.
MacDonald, with teammates Eric McCarthy, Fred Fraser, and Russell Campbell, went undefeated in the event, winning the A final on Saturday with a 10-9 extra end victory over Frank MacCormack from the host club. On Sunday, MacDonald took the B section final in this double-knockout event, with a 9-6 win over Derryl McCarville of the Silver Fox. As MacDonald won both sections, a final game is not necessary. Earlier on Sunday, he had defeated another Fox rink, with an 8-4 victory over Douglas Simmons. McCarville defeated McCormack 9-4 to advance to the B final against MacDonald.
Lori Palmer is women's Eight Year Champion
Lori Palmer of the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club defeated clubmate Sheila Compton by a 9-3 score on Sunday morning, to take the women's championship at the Provincial Eight Year and Under Curling Championships. Palmer, with teammates Marsha Pyke, Christine Simmons, and Brenda Howard went undefeated throughout the five-team double-knockout competition, winning both A and B sections, making a final game later on Sunday unnecessary. In the Sunday morning game, Palmer picked up four points in the second end, and stole another four-ender in the 8th to seal the victory. On Saturday, Palmer defeated Compton by a 7-6 score to win the A section, giving her a bye to the finals. Compton then went on to defeat Paulette Richard of the Cornwall Curling Club by a 10-4 score to advance to the Sunday morning B final. Other members of the runner-up Compton rink are Marilyn Mansfield, Debbie Ramsay, and Nancy Sinclair. The Eight Year competition is for adult curlers with eight or less years of curling experience.
