History Men's Assoc. Minutes 1980-81 through 1989-90

PEI Curling Association Minutes (Men's) 1980-81 through 1989-90

The recording of the history of the PEI Curling Association (Men's and Ladies) and curling clubs on PEI is part of a project initiated by Jerry Muzika through the PEI Curling Association with the view to preserving the curling heritage of Prince Edward Island. Minutes from the Associations and some of the curling clubs have been reviewed and excerpts taken and compiled chronologically. Some anecdotal accounts have also been included for their historical interest.

Thank you - to all who have cooperated and participated in this project. Especially to Debbie Carragher and Janet Doiron at Sport PEI, Shirley Lank, Cornwall Curling Club, Ron Atkinson, Belvedere, and all those who located minutes and entrusted them to me as I carried out my review. Any errors and/or omissions are unintentional and corrections should be passed on to me at this web site. - Jerry Muzika

PRESIDENT'S REPORT - P.E.I.C.A.

There were several recommendations put forward at our last Annual Meeting by the membership and we are attempting to deal with the majority.

It was suggested that a record on the History of the P.E.I.C.A. be undertaken. We initially set up a committee to work on this, however, we received very little support from our clubs. Therefore, we decided to apply for a Summer Employment/Experience program. I am happy to announce that we were successful and we will have a student (History major) working on compiling our Club's history. This project and student will be under the very capable supervision of Mr. Don Hutchinson.

The nominations for Hall of Fame were submitted as requested.

Respectfully submitted,

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

The 1986 -1987 curling year for the P.E.I.C.A. has been very busy.

The Provincial Playdowns witnessed some important changes this past year, going to a triple knock-out in the Final Eights of the Tankard. Our officiating was handled for the first time by our Curl Canada Division and both these steps proved to be positive in my mind and should be continued and supported by our Association.

This past year saw a national competition, the Mixed, held in Summerside and also saw a national champion come to PEI. Congratulations to Peter Gallant and his rink for their fantastic win. We were also shown what can be done with some enthusiastic people with some initiative.

In closing, I would like to thank the Executive for their support in the past year and in return wish them the best of support and progress in the upcoming year.

Respectfully submitted,

Bill MacFadyen

PRESIDENT'S REPORT - 1988

The new constitution approved at the 1987 Annual Meeting became the basis of the organization during the year. I feel the changes which we put in place were a positive step in giving our clubs a stronger voice in running the Association.

We started a program to promote curling in the province which I feel will pay dividends in the future.

Some changes were made at the Rules Committee meetings. These include: a change to the sweeping rule which now clearly defines the correct method of sweeping, a change to the interpretation on touched running stones, a new rule which now permits a curler to use only one type of broom for sweeping during a game, work will continue on a decisions manual for our sport.

The use of a 5th player was encouraged during the Brier.

The Peter Gallant 1987 National Mixed Championship team was named Team of the Year by Sport PEI.

A number of Thank yous.

4.Jerry Muzika who provided me with much help and direction over the past seven years.

5.To the PEI Curling Association who gave me an opportunity to serve over the last eight years.

Respectfully submitted,

Notes: Good co-operation was received from Seamans, media coverage was extensive; Pepsi Junior

dates should not coincide with another provincial because of the difficulty of being in two places at the same time. It was suggested that the age be reduced to Under 17 for the 1995 Games. Level II certification be required for 1991. Game people requested Level III. All clubs hosting must be a Pepsi house. The CCA rejected Junior Competition Cards.

Presidents Report

June 13, 1989

I would particularly like to thank the following: Rex McCarvelle and Lyall Huggan for the Intramural School program, to the Charlottetown Curling Club and Cornwall Curling Club for introducing the Little Rocks to our Future Curlers.

Our highlight for this curling season was the 1989 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship team of Robert Campbell, Angela Roberts, Mark O'Rourke and Kathy O'Rourke. For Prince Edward Island to win two of the last three years makes me proud as a curler and I am sure you all feel the same way.

Respectfully submitted, John Fortier, President, P.E.I.C.A

President's Report

Submitted by Merrill D. Scott

May 29, 1990, Annual Meeting

Our 1989-90 Curling Association's year has quickly come to an end. I believe we have taken great strides in curling during the last year, bearing in mind that we have limited dollars to work with. However, I admit that more can and could be done in future.

Little Rockers

It is with pleasure that three or four clubs have the foresight to provide small curling rocks, so that interest in curling can begin at a much younger age. In hockey, kids start very young. I feel we have to be competitive with hockey. I know we can as it does not cost very many dollars to suit up a junior curler.

New Facilities

During the last couple of years we had an additional ice surface installed in the Souris Curling Club, a brand new body over the ice surface at Crapaud, improvements on Belvedere ice. At the western end of PEI, Alberton has begun plans to add an additional ice surface.

In Closing

I wish to sincerely thank my executive. They were an excellent group to work with, as well as the whole delegate group from all the clubs.
