Bob MacWilliams rink captures inaugural Senior Mixed title

The host Cornwall Curling Club rink of Bob MacWilliams, Myrna Sanderson, Jim Farquharson and Ruth Stavert defeated the John Holmes foursome by an 8-6 score this morning to win the inaugural Provincial Senior (age 50 and over) Mixed Curling Championship. Other members of the runner-up Holmes rink, from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, are Ann, Doug, and Barb Currie. Yesterday, the Summerside rink, after eliminating Cornwall's Geoff Scutt by a 9-8 score, forced today's sudden-death final by defeating the MacWilliams squad by a 10-3 score in the B section final. MacWilliams had won the A final previously. The winning MacWilliams rink will receive the new Senior Mixed, handmade by Captain Don Graham.

New trophy for Mixed Seniors unveiled

Photo: Captain Don Graham donates a trophy made and designed by himself for the new Senior Mixed Curling Championships, to be held at Cornwall January 12-16. Receiving the trophy from Captain Graham is PEI Curling Association Secretary Diane MacKay.

"We are very excited about this new championship, as we felt there was a need for an event such as this in the province," said association president Chick Morrison. "It is a new concept, but with the numbers of eligible seniors now playing and enjoying the sport, we are sure it will be a popular addition."

Currently curling has a Men's and a Women's Seniors, with the provincial winners representing P.E.I at nationals. The Senior Mixed however will be purely a provincial tournament, although Morrison hopes that if the format proves successful, it may encourage others, especially in the region, to offer a competition.

The format of the event will be double knock-out with games lasting eight ends. The skip and the third must be opposite gender, and there must be two male and two female members on each team. This will be one of the few provincial competitions in which players will be allowed to use a delivery stick. Delivery sticks are currently forbidden in events which lead to a national championship.
