The Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home PEI Stick Curling Championships wrapped up Thursday afternoon at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary with the duo of Sherill Barwise and Bill Smith from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton winning the 15 team Open (any combination of men/women) division, while frequent event winners Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert from the Cornwall Curling Club took the 4 team Women’s division title.

Barwise and Smith completed play with a 7-1 win-loss record, losing only to defending champion Paul Field and his wife Bernie from Cornwall in round-robin play, beating Cornwall’s Barry and Myrna Craswell 8-3 in their semi-final match, and defeating the host club’s Arthur Lewis and Dale Dennis duo 5-1 in the final. Finalists Lewis and Dennis finished with a 6-3 record, and advanced to the final with a 6-1 semi-final win over Alvin Hackett and Victor Hogan from Western.

The women’s division champion was determined in a final between two Cornwall teams, with Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert unseating defending champions Etta Reid and Elaine Hughes with a 4-2 victory. Clarke/Stavert finished double round-robin play with a 4-2 win-loss record and advanced directly to the final, while the Reid/Hughes duo were in third place at 2-4, but shut out the second-place Western Community team of Audrey Callaghan and Anne Barwise by an 8-0 score in the semi-final.

The top four Open Division teams (Barwise/Smith, Lewis/Dennis, Barry and Myrna Craswell, and Alvin Hackett and Victor Hogan, along with the top two Women’s division duos from this event (Clarke/Stavert, Reid Hughes) advance to the Maritime Stick Curling Championships March 13-15 in Woodstock NB, while the top four Open and Women’s teams are eligible to compete at the 2020 Canadian Stick Curling Championships to be held April 2-5 at the Highland Curling Club in Regina, Saskatchewan.
