Mike Gaudet rink wins 25th annual PEI Labatt Tankard

Summerside's Mike Gaudet  Evan Sullivan, Craig Arsenault and Sean Ledgerwood captured the 25th Annual Labatt Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championship Sunday afternoon at their own Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, with a 9-6 win over Charlottetown's John Likely rink. Gaudet had won the Tankard previously in 1994. His sister Suzanne is this year's Scott provincial women's champion.

The Mike Gaudet rink will now compete in the Nokia Brier at Saskatchewan Place in Saskatoon, March 6th-14th, while the Suzanne Gaudet rink are off to the Canadian Scott Championship in Red Deer Alta. February 21-29.

Mike Gaudet to play John Likely for Tankard

Mike Gaudet defeated Peter MacDonald 9-3 Saturday evening to advance to the Labatt Tankard PEI Men's Curling Championship final Sunday afternoon at three. Both rinks are from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. In the final, Gaudet will face Charlottetown's John Likely rink, who finished first in round robin play.

Here is a summary of Saturday evening's game:
End 1:  MacDonald misses run back.  Gaudet draws for two.
End 2:  MacDonald attempts tap back through port.  Doesn't move rock far enough.  Gaudet steals one.
End 3:  MacDonald facing three, hits for one, wrecks on front.  Gaudet steals two.
End 4:  MacDonald plays double raise for two, rock runs straight, gets one.
End 5:  MacDonald misses hit to lie one.  Gaudet draws for two.

Likely advances to Tankard final--MacDonald, Gaudet meet in semi

Charlottetown's John Likely went through round-robin play with only one loss, finishing in 1st place, and earning a berth in the 3 PM Sunday final at the Labatt Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championship, taking place at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Two host club rinks, Peter MacDonald and Mike Gaudet, finished with 5-2 records, and meet in the semi-final, Saturday at 7 PM.

On Saturday morning, Gaudet defeated Steve Ellis of O'Leary's Maple Leaf Curling Club 9-8 in an extra end to advance to the semi-final. MacDonald defeated Summerside clubmate Marc LeClair 9-5 to earn his semi-final berth, while Likely advanced to the championship game with a 10-4 victory over Charlottetown clubmate Andrew Robinson. Jeff MacCallum defeated Blair weeks 7-4 in the remaining game.

Final standings at the end of round-robin play: Likely 6-1, MacDonald and Gaudet 5-2, Robinson 4-3, MacCallum 3-4, Steve Ellis and Blair Weeks 2-5, and Marc LeClair 1-6.

The Tankard winner will advance to the Nokia Brier, at Saskatchewan Place in Saskatoon, March 6th-14th.

Tight race at Tankard with One Round-Robin Draw Left

With one round-robin draw remaining at the Labatt Tankard PEI Men's Curling Championship, John Likely is still in the lead, sporting a 5-1 win-loss record. Close on his heels are three rinks, all at 4-2: Mike Gaudet and Peter MacDonald, from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, and Likely's Charlottetown clubmate Andrew Robinson. Three rinks -- Steve Ellis, Jeff MacCallum, and Blair Weeks are at 2-4, while Marc LeClair is 1-5.

The final round-robin draw, at 9 AM Saturday, sees Gaudet take on Ellis, MacDonald meet LeClair, Likely face Robinson, and Weeks play MacCallum. Semi-Finals (second vs third place) or Tie Breakers go at 7 PM Saturday, If the semi is not played then, it goes at 10 AM on Sunday. The Final is set for Sunday at 3 PM, with the first place team taking on the winner of the semi-final.

In action on Friday afternoon, Peter MacDonald shaded Andrew Robinson 10-9 in an extra end, Gaudet lost 10-7 to Weeks, MacCallum defeated Ellis 10-4, and Likely downed LeClair 5-2.

In the evening draw, Peter MacDonald handed John Likely his 1st loss, by a decisive 9-3 score, scoring a triple in the 1st end, stealing a single in end two,  getting another triple in the 4th, and a deuce in the seventh. Robinson defeated LeClair 8-5, and Ellis downed Weeks 9-5. Trailing 6-5 after 9, Mike Gaudet scored a triple in the final end to win 8-6 over clubmate Jeff MacCallum.

The Tankard winner will advance to the Nokia Brier at Saskatchewan Place in Saskatoon, March 6th-14th.

Likely 4-0 after Tankard Day Two -- Gaudet, Robinson have one loss

John Likely is alone in first place as Thursday round-robin play wrapped up at the Labatt Tankard PEI Men's Curling Championship at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Likely defeated Charlottetown clubmate Blair Weeks 8-2 in the afternoon draw, taking a triple in end three, and stealing a deuce in four. In the evening draw, he scored a triple in the second end, and stole singles in the next three ends to defeat Steve Ellis of the Maple Leaf club in O'Leary 7-1, to end the day with a 4-0 record.

The host club's Mike Gaudet, who lost to Likely on Wednesday, doubled clubmate Marc LeClair 10-5, and handed Andrew Robinson of the Charlottetown Curling Club his first loss, with a 9-5 score, after stealing a triple in the fourth end. Robinson won his afternoon contest, edging Jeff MacCallum of the Silver Fox 6-5. Both Gaudet and Robinson are 3-1, while Summerside's Peter MacDonald, who defeated Ellis 10-7, but lost 9-6 to Weeks, is at 2-2. Ellis, Week, MacCallum, and LeClair are at 1-3.

Friday action at 2 and 7 PM sees Gaudet play Weeks, Ellis take on MacCallum, LeClair face Likely, and Robinson meet MacDonald in the 2 PM draw, with MacDonald vs Likely, Robinson vs LeClair, MacCallum vs Gaudet, and Ellis vs Weeks at 7 PM. Round-robin play wraps up with a 9 AM draw on Saturday, with Semi-Finals or Tie Breakers at 7 PM Saturday, or Semi-Finals at 10 AM Sunday (if not played Sat. Night). The Final goes Sunday at 3 PM, with the first place team taking on the winner of the semi-final. The winner will advance to the Nokia Brier at Saskatchewan Place in Saskatoon, March 6th-14th.

Likely, Robinson lead after Day One at Final Eight

John Likely and Andrew Robinson, both former PEI Men's Champions, are unbeaten at 2-0 heading into play Thursday at the Labatt Tankard Final 8 PEI Men's Curling Championship at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. 4 rinks are at 1-1: Mike Gaudet, Peter MacDonald, Marc LeClair and Steve Ellis.

Action Thursday at 2 PM sees Jeff MacCallum of the host club play Andrew Robinson, Marc LeClair meet Silver Fox clubmate Mike Gaudet, Blair Weeks face Charlottetown clubmate John Likely, and Peter MacDonald of Summerside take on O'Leary's Steve Ellis.

At 7 PM, it's Likely vs Ellis, Weeks vs MacDonald, vs Robinson, and MacCallum vs LeClair.

Final Eight set for Labatt Tankard

The last four teams have been chosen for the Labatt Tankard Final Eight, as action concluded February 3rd at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary.  Marc LeClair, from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, edged Crapaud's Allan Inman rink 8-7 to take Qualifier #5. Steve Ellis, from the host Maple Leaf club defeated clubmate Clair Sweet 10-6 to grab Qualifier #6, while Jeff MacCallum took Qualifier #7, defeating Silver Fox clubmate Mel Bernard by a 7-4 score. Peter MacDonald, also from the Silver Fox, grabbed the final qualifying spot with a 10-7 win over Charlottetown's Jody Jackson rink.

The final tally: four Silver Fox rinks - Mike Gaudet, Mark LeClair, Jeff MacCallum, and Peter MacDonald, three rinks from the Charlottetown Curling Club - John Likely, Andrew Robinson, and Blair Weeks, along with Steve Ellis from Maple Leaf. These rinks now advance to the Labatt Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championship Final Eight round at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside from February 11-15. The eventual winner will compete in the Nokia Brier at Saskatchewan Place in Saskatoon, March 6th-14th.

Two more Qualifiers chosen at Tankard

Four of the eight qualifiers for the Tankard finals in Summerside have now been chosen. Monday evening at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary, Andrew Robinson of the Charlottetown Curling Club defeated Peter MacDonald of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club by a 9-6 score to grab Qualifier #3. The game was tied coming home, and MacDonald had hammer, but Robinson stole a triple in the 10th for the win.

In the other qualifier, Charlottetown's Blair Weeks defeated Marc LeClair of the Silver Fox 7-2.

Qualifying on Sunday were John Likely of Charlottetown, and Summerside's Mike Gaudet rink.

The final four qualifiers will be selected in the final draw, Tuesday at 6 PM.

News update: February 1st, 2004

First Two Qualifiers chosen at Tankard

John Likely of Charlottetown, and Mike Gaudet of the Summerside Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club are the first two qualifers for the Final Eight portion of the 25th Annual Labatt Tankard PEI men's curling championship, set for the Silver Fox Feb. 11-15.

At the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary this afternoon, Likely defeated Summerside's Marc LeClair rink 7-4, while Gaudet scored a deuce in the final end to edge Silver Fox clubmate Peter MacDonald 10-9 in a very close game, with Gaudet scoring two triples to lead 6-4 at the half. MacDonald came back with a triple in end seven, and stolen singles in eight and nine to lead by one going into the final end.

To qualify in the "A" section, Gaudet won four straight games, while Likely won three.

The next two qualifiers will be decided in the 6 PM Monday night draw, with the final four chosen Tuesday in the 6 PM draw.

Sunday draws are continuing, with the 4 PM draw underway, and another one at 7 PM.

Monday draws are at noon, three, and six.

Defending champion out, 1st two qualifiers set for Sunday at 1 PM.

After nine draws at the PEI Labatt Tankard playdowns, defending champion Robert Campbell of Charlottetown has been eliminated from further play in this triple knockout event, after losing 7-5 to clubmate Jody Jackson on Saturday evening.

Three Silver Fox rinks, and John Likely of Charlottetown have advanced to the "A" finals Sunday at 1 PM, with two of the qualifying slots for the Final 8 event in Summerside up for grabs. Peter MacDonald meets Mike Gaudet for Qualifier #1, while Likely takes on Marc LeClair for Qualifier #2.

The 9 PM draw is now underway, with Sunday draws set for 10 AM, and 1, 4, and 7 PM.

John Likely, Blair Weeks plus six Silver Fox rinks undefeated after Day One at Tankard

After the first day of action at the Labatt Tankard PEI Men's Curling Playdowns at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary (some Friday games were played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton), Charlottetown's John Likely and Blair Weeks, plus the following Summerside rinks: Peter MacDonald, Mike Gaudet, Mel Bernard, Jeff MacCallum, Marc LeClair, and Louis Walsh are all undefeated. Likely is 1-0, as his seeding in the event allowed him a bye in the first round. The others are 2-0.

Draws today are at 9 AM, 12 noon, 3, 6 and 9 PM.

FINAL TALLY: 30 RINKS TO COMPETE FOR LABATT TANKARD

Entries have been finalized for the Labatt Tankard Provincial Men's Curling Championships. Thirty-one entries were received, from six of the seven PEI curling clubs (no entries were received from the Cornwall Curling Club). Seniors champion Ted MacFadyen, from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, has withdrawn his entry due to possible contention with the Canadian Seniors Championships, leaving thirty teams. 

Defending champion Robert Campbell is back with a new rink, while last year's runner-up Andrew Robinson is back with his team intact.

Teams entered will compete in the playdowns, which run from January 29th to February 3rd at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary. Eight rinks will then qualify for the Final 8 event, Feb. 11-15 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. The winning rink from this event will compete in the Nokia Brier, March 6-14 in Saskatoon.

Maple Leaf, Silver Fox host 2004 Tankard events!

The western part of PEI is the scene for the 25th annual PEI Labatt Tankard. The triple-knockout open playdown portion of the event has concluded at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary, with the Final 8 teams advancing to the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside for the round-robin championship event. Last years champion, Robert Campbell, was eliminated early in the playdowns.

Four Silver Fox rinks - Mike Gaudet, Mark LeClair, Jeff MacCallum, and Peter MacDonald, three rinks from the Charlottetown Curling Club - John Likely, Andrew Robinson, and Blair Weeks, along with Steve Ellis from Maple Leaf have advanced to the Final Eight round, which takes place at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside from February 11-15.
