It’s down to four teams at the Labatt Tankard Final Eight Championship Round in Montague, and they all curl out of the Charlottetown Curling Club.
The first of two tiebreakers to determine fourth place was played Saturday morning, with Mel Bernard of the Silver Fox getting off to a quick start in his game against Jamie Newson of Charlottetown. Bernard, who is this year’s Seniors champion, took a single, a triple, and another single for a 4-0 lead after 3 ends. Newson took a deuce in end four, but Bernard brought the game to a swift ending with deuces in ends five and six for a 9-2 final score.
The second tiebreaker saw Bill Hope double Bernard by a 10-5 score, taking triples in ends five and seven to grab the final spot in the Page playoff. Hope, playing with Dennis Watts, Jeff Gallant, and Phillip MacInnis, now plays third place finisher Rod MacDonald in the Page 3-4 game, while first place John Likely meets second place Ted MacFadyen in the 1-2 game. The Page games go tonight at 7, with the winner of the 1-2 game advancing directly to the 3 pm Sunday final, and the loser playing the winner of tonight’s 3-4 game in the semi-final at 10 Sunday morning, with the winner going to the final.
The Labatt Tankard champion advances to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 7-15 in Calgary.
