Sylvan Learning 17 and Under starts today

The Sylvan Learning Provincial 17 and Under Curling Championships get underway this afternoon and wrap up Monday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, with some games today and Friday taking place at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

Defending and Atlantic champions Sam Ramsay and Sarah Fullerton are both back to defend their Island titles. Summerside’s Ramsay has a new team this year, listed as curling out of the host Western Community club, with Connor MacPhee at third, Daniel McCarthy at second, and Shawn Pitre throwing lead stone. They are coached by Roger Gavin. Cornwall’s Fullerton adds Alexis Wright at second, and is coached this year by Brenda MacMillon.

Eight junior men’s teams and an equal number of junior women’s rinks will play identical triple-knockout formats, with a two-game championship round for both set for Monday at 10 am and 2 pm. If the same team wins all three sections, no championship round will be needed If a team wins two sections, they will play in both championship round games, and win the title if they take either. If there are three different winners, the team that won the most qualifying games will win a bye to the finals.

Opening ceremonies are at 6:30 this evening.
Live scoring of this event will be available at peicurling.com/17andunder

The winners in both the junior men’s and women’s divisions will advance to the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships, April 10-13 in Cornerbrook NL.
