Likely 2-0, Campbell 2-1, MacKenzie 1-2 at TSA spiel

Three Island rinks, skipped by John Likely, Robert Campbell, and Tyler MacKenzie, are taking part in this weekend’s 18 team Best Western – TSA Curling Classic cashspiel at the Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John NB.

Going into the Saturday action, 2002 event winner Likely, whose team includes Phil Gorveatt, Mark Butler, and Mike Dillon, is 2-0, recording wins over New Brunwsick’s Scott Jones (14-3) and Michael Kennedy (7-3). 

Campbell, with teammates Steve Burgess, Jamie Newson, and Rob Doherty, is sporting a 2-1  win-loss record, after winning his opener, 9-7 over Jamie Murphy of Nova Scotia, losing 7-4 to Jamie Brannen of New Brunswick, and beating Ryan Sherrard, also from NB, 6-2 in the late draw.

The Tyler MacKenzie foursome, which includes Steve van Ouwerkerk, Lincoln Peters, and Nick van Ouwerkerk, has picked up one win against two losses, losing their Thursday opener 11-6 to Paul Dobson, edging Gary Sullivan 8-7, and losing 7-5 to 2008 event winner Marc Lecocq on Friday. These teams are all from New Brunswick.

Round robin play wraps up Saturday night, with today’s draws at 9 am, and 12, 3, 6 and 9 pm.  There are three pools, with an Island rink in each, so they will not face each other in the round robin.

In Saturday play, Likely plays Rebecca Atkinson (NB) at 9 am, with MacKenzie playing Mike Flannery (NB) and Campbell facing Tim Comeau (NB) at noon, Likely taking on Chad Stevens (NB)  at 3 pm, MacKenzie meeting Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc (NS) and Jim Sullivan (NB) playing Campbell at 6 pm, and Likely going against Paul Dobson (NB) at 9 pm.

Quarter-finals go Sunday morning at 9, with the semis at noon, and the final at 3 pm.
