The Cathy Auld rink from the St. Georges Golf and Country Club in Toronto beat the Sherry Middaugh foursome from Coldwater Ontario by a 7-2 score in the final of the Southwestern Ontario Women’s Charity Cashspiel, which wrapped up Monday in London. Other members of the Auld team are Cheryl McPherson, Melissa Foster, Mary Chilvers, and fifth player Janet Murphy. The game was close until the seventh end, when they took four points.
Auld beat Middaugh earlier, by a 6-2 score, to advance to the quarter-final round, then took a triple in the final end to edge Julie Hastings of Markham 7-6, and doubled Jacqueline Harrison of Waterdown Ontario 8-4 in the semi-final.
Two time defending champion Rachel Homan lost out to Alison Goring of Toronto in the quarter-final round, while last year’s runner-up, world champion Bingyu Wang of China, also lost in the quarter-finals, to Middaugh.
PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink won their first game, against Goring, and their second, against four-time Canadian Senior champ Anne Dunn, but then lost their next three games, and were eliminated on Sunday morning.
Team Birt, along with other Island teams skipped by Donna Butler, Kathy O’Rourke, Rebecca Jean MacPhee, and Anita Casey, next head to the Beausejour Curling Club in Moncton, for the Lady Monctonian Invitational Spiel, which starts on Friday.
