Truro’s Colleen Pinkney rink, who won the Canadian Senior Women’s Curling Championships last March in Summerside, doubled the Melissa Adams foursome from New Brunswick by a 6-3 score to win this afternoon’s final at the Lady Monctonian invitational women’s cashspiel at Club Beausejour in Moncton. Other members of the Pinkney team are Wendy Currie, Karen Hennigar, and Susan Creelman, while Sandy Comeau, Stacey Leger, and Pamela Nicol round out the runner-up Adams squad. The Pinkney rink will be representing Canada at the 2010 World Senior Curling Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia in April.
Adams edged Ashley Howard of Moncton 7-6 in the semi-final, while Pinkney got by Andrea Kelly of NB 5-4.
PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink, last year’s champions, lost their quarter-final 7-4 to Pinkney. The Birt team, which includes third Shelly Bradley, second Leslie MacDougall, and lead Stefanie Clark, with coach Charlie Sullivan, finished round-robin play with a 3-2 win-loss record, and were the only Island rink to advance to the quarter-final round.
The Rebecca Jean MacPhee rink also went 3-2, while the other PEI teams, skipped by Donna Butler, Kathy O’Rourke, and Anita Casey, did not manage to pick up a win.
In the other quarter-finals, Adams doubled Mary Ann Arsenault of Halifax 10-5, Kelly edged Jill Mouzar of Halifax 4-3, and Howard beat Sylvie Robichaud from the host Beausejour club by a 5-3 count.
