Ottawa’s Rachel Homan rink, along with the Connor Duhaime team from Peterborough, were the winners at the 16th annual John Shea Insurance OVCA Junior SuperSpiel, which wrapped up this afternoon in Ottawa. Homan, who has won this event previously, and will be competing in the Olympic Pre-Trials later this month in Prince George BC, beat the Clancy Grandy foursome from Guelph by a 7-5 score in the final, while Dunhaime edged Ottawa’s Neil Sinclair squad 5-4 in an extra end. Homan also won the traditional Saturday night match-up between the first men’s and women’s qualifiers, beating Duhaime by winning five skins and $310.
Cornwall PEI’s Sarah Fullerton rink completed triple-knockout play with a 1-3 win-loss record, and lost in the consolation round Sunday morning by a 7-4 score against the Pierre-Luc Morrissette rink from Quebec. The men’s and women’s divisions are combined in the consolation round. The Fullerton foursome, which includes third Michelle McQuaid, second Whitney Young, and lead Sara MacRae, with coach Brenda MacMillan, won their opener 7-3 over Andreanne Cantin of Quebec, but then lost their next three games, 7-6 to Clancy Grandy of Guelph Ont., 9-2 to Alanna Routledge of Buckingham Quebec, and 8-6 to Danielle Parsons of NS, who came from behind with a five-pointer in the 7th end.
