Mel Bernard rink earns bye to PEI Legion final

The Mel Bernard rink from the Summerside branch, aided by a seventh-end triple, doubled the defending champion Charlie Wilkinson team from Charlottetown by an 8-4 score Saturday night to capture the A final of the double-knockout Provincial Legion Curling Championships, being played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. This gives the Bernard team a bye to the final, Monday at 7 pm. If the Summerside rink also wins the B final, Sunday at 5:30 pm, that final game will not be needed, and they will be declared the winner.

Bernard now faces  Lou Nowlan, also from Summerside, while Wilkinson takes on Rick Hardy from the host Bloomfield branch in the B section playdowns this afternoon at 1 pm, with the winners advancing to the B final. Hardy edged out Montague’s Donald Clarey 7-6, while Nowlan downed Kent Noye of Ellerslie 9-1 to advance to the B qualifiers.

The PEI Legion champion will advance to the Dominion Legion Curling Championship, March 13-19, in Stephenville NL.
