The first day is over at The Medicine Shoppe Provincial Masters Curling Championships at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, with all eleven men’s rinks seeing action. Women’s play gets underway Tueday at 12:30 pm, with four teams, including six-time defending champion Jeanne Duffenais from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, taking part.
Four teams remain undefeated on the men’s side, skipped by Fred Fall of the host club, Lou Nowlan and Louis Walsh from the Silver Fox, and Roddie MacLean of Cornwall.
Nowlan, who won five consecutive Masters titles from 2003 through 2007, edged Bob Acorn of Charlottetown 4-3 in his opener, and then beat defending champion and Fox clubmate John Holmes 7-1. Fall beat Cornwall’s Rupert Sweetapple team 7-4 in his only game. Walsh recorded a 7-4 win over Cornwall’s John DeLuca, while MacLean edged Clair Sweet of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf Club 8-7 in an extra end, and then beat Bob Maynard of the Fox 9-2.
Men’s play in this double-knockout event continues Tuesday at 10 am and 3 pm. The event wraps up on Thursday.
Men’s and women’s winners and runners-up advance to the Maritime Masters Championships, February 14-17 at the Beaver Curling Club in Moncton.
Winners may also participate in the Canadian Masters, March 28-April 4 in Saint John.
