Tiffany Sweet and Kyle Hughes rinks win Sylvan 17 and Under A Divisions

The Tiffany Sweet foursome from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, and the Kyle Hughes team from the Montague and Charlottetown clubs have captured the women’s and men’s A sections of the triple-knockout Sylvan Learning Provincial age 17 and Under curling championships being played at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Sweet, whose team includes Chantal Clements, Kathleen O’Meara, and Laura O’Meara, and is coached by Clair and Ralph Sweet, doubled Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink 6-3, while Hughes edged another Cornwall rink, skipped by Tyler Smith, by a 6-5 score. Other members of the Hughes foursome are Tony Nabuurs, Taylor McInnis, and Chandler Matheson, with coach Arnold Nabuurs. Play continues at 7 pm, with the B finals going Saturday at 11 am. There is another Saturday draw at 3 pm, with the C finals going Sunday morning at 11. The two game championship round between the section winners goes Sunday and Monday at 3 pm. If Sweet or Hughes win all three sections, the final round of their division will not be needed. If a team wins two sections, they will win the championship if they take either championship round game. The winning rinks will advance to the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay NB.
