Nova Scotia’s Sue Ellen Bartlett rink beat BC’s Karin Host team 7-5 in the final of the women’s Division of the Canadian Masters Curling Championship in Saint John on Friday night.
Bartlett, who was undefeated in the event, scored two points in the opening end of the gold-medal match. She added a triple in five and stole a single in six to build up a 7-3 lead.
Host, who had a deuce in four, trimmed the deficit with two points in the seventh end but couldn’t steal in the final frame and settled for silver. PEI’s Jeanne Duffenais team finished round robin play with a 2-3 win-loss record.
In the men’s division, Ontario’s Mike Dorey scored a deuce in the final end to edge Manitoba’s Ron Westcott rink 5-4 in the final. It was Westcott’s first loss in the event. Ontario advanced by beating PEI’s Clair Sweet rink in a tiebreaker, after both teams finished round robin play with 4-2 records, and then went on to win the Page 2 vs 2 and semi-final games.
