Two Island athletes  threw double plays Wednesday in Charlottetown at the 2009 Sport P.E.I. awards banquet, each winning two trophies for their display cases.

Charlottetown native and skip Brett Gallant and his curling rink of third Adam Casey, second Anson Carmody and lead Jamie Danbrook won team of the year and Bill Halpenny awards. The Bill Halpenny Award is awarded for outstanding international achievement.
Stratford’s Matt D’Amour won junior male and the Lieutenant Governor’s award as the top overall athlete for his gymnastic exploits in 2009.
Gallant, also nominated for the senior male award, was floored at the double win.  “Amazing. We didn’t even know we were being considered,” said Gallant. “It’s a great honour.”

Gallant’s rink earned the nods from a silver-medal  finish at the 2009 world junior curling championships and gold at the nationals, P.E.I.’s first men’s junior title since 1976, and the provincial victory.
