Island rinks out at Sobeys Slam, Atlantic Challenge

PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke team lost to Scotland’s Eve Muirhead by a 6-4 score this morning in quarter-final play at the Sobeys Slam in New Glasgow NS. The other  winners were all from Manitoba:  Jennifer Jones, Jones’ former teammate Cathy Overton-Clapham, and Chelsea Carey. The semis go at noon, with the final at 3 pm. The other PEI rink in the event, skipped by Suzanne Birt, did not make it to the championship round.

In the men’s Atlantic Challenge co-event,  PEI’s Rod MacDonald rink lost their semi-final game to Nova Scotia men’s champion Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc by a 7-5 score. MacDonald scored singles in five ends, while Fitzner-LeBlanc scored a four ender and a triple. The other noon finalist will be Shawn Adams of Halifax, who beat Moncton’s Russ Howard 7-3 Saturday night.

The Peter Gallant rink, with Peter’s son Brett throwing 4th stones, lost out in the tiebreaker round, beating Doug MacKenzie of Halifax 7-2, but losing 5-3 to Fitzner-Leblanc.
