Minister congratulates Robert Campbell rink – Canadian Mixed Curling Champions

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI — After leading the competition for most of the week, the Robert Campbell rink showed great skill under pressure to win the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, says Minister of Health and Wellness, Carolyn Bertram.
“The determination, skill and impressive team work exhibited by the Campbell rink throughout the week could not be matched by the rest of the field,” said Minister Bertram. “On behalf of all Islanders, I would like to congratulate the Campbell rink for their great success at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.”
Campbell lost just once in round robin, earning a bye to the final and finishing with an overall 11-1 record. Other members of the team include: third, Rebecca Jean MacPhee; second, Robbie Doherty; and lead, Jackie Reid.
This is the second mixed title for Campbell, who won the tournament in 1989, and the first title for MacPhee, Doherty and Reid. It is also the third mixed title for Prince Edward Island since the championship began in 1964.
“The continued success of Island curlers at the national level speaks very highly of the calibre of athletes we have on Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Bertram. “This win by the Campbell rink, as well as the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Charlottetown, puts Prince Edward Island on top of the curling world.”
Prince Edward Island hosts the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts February 19 to 27.
