Pitre and Smith win B sections at Pepsi Juniors

The Spencer Pitre rink is in the driver’s seat at the men’s division of the Pepsi Bottling Group Provincial Juniors Curling Championships in Montague, having captured both the “A” and “B” sections of this triple knockout event. He can take the championship with the 8:30 draw this evening, should he also win the “C” event final. If not, a win in either championship game on Wednesday would give him the title, while his opponent would have to win both games. In the B final this afternoon, the Pitre team, which includes Connor MacPhee, Matthew Nabuurs, and Eric Pidgeon, and plays out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, scored five points in the fourth end en route to an 8-2 win over the Jeffrey Taylor foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club.

There are separate “A” and “B” winners in the junior women’s division, with last year’s age 15 and Under champions, the Veronica Smith rink out of Cornwall, who were trailing 7-6 after eight ends, picking up a triple in the 9th, and stealing a single in the tenth end to beat the Carolyn Rose rink of Montague by a 10-7 score to win this morning’s “B” final. Other members of the Smith rink are Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey. The defending champion Sarah Fullerton rink, also from Cornwall, won the “A” section on Monday.

The 5 pm draw this afternoon will see Rose take on Fullerton, and Smith play Amanda MacLean of O’Leary, in the women’s division, while, in the men’s section, Taylor faces Matthew MacLean of O’Leary, and Pitre takes on Samuel Ramsay and his combined Charlottetown/Montague/Silver Fox team, with the winners playing in the “C” finals at 8:30 this evening.

The championship round is scheduled for 11:30 am and 3:30 pm Wednesday, with the winners advancing to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 29-February 5, 2011, in Calgary.
