Canada Games curlers hope to hit ice running (Guardian)

2011 Canada Games

By Nick Murray, Sport PEI Communications Officer, and Canada Games Mission Staff member for week one.

A quick check of the official Canada Games website this week told me that the hottest ticket in town will be at the Mayflower, home of the curling tournament. The sold out sign is already hanging for the semi-finals and medal games in both the men’s and women’s events.

With Canada’s standing in the world game, the Games will no doubt feature many of tomorrow’s future stars.

P.E.I. has always sent fine curlers, and medals have been won in the past by the rinks of Brett Gallant, a bronze in 2007, Sean Matheson, bronze in 1991, and Krista Cameron, featuring a young Suzanne Gaudet and Stefanie Richard, who were silver medallists in 1995.

Our representatives this time out have big shoes to fill to emulate those great teams of the past, but the Amanda MacLean rink from the Maple Leaf Club in O’Leary, and Tyler Smith from the Silver Fox in Summerside, are not lacking in confidence.
