(Government of PEI) Hosting the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts is a great opportunity for Prince Edward Island to shine, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

“Having the 2011 Scotties in Prince Edward Island is great exposure for our province,” said Premier Ghiz. “The opportunity to showcase our rich history, world-class hospitality and beautiful scenery to a national audience will benefit our province greatly.”

The Province of Prince Edward Island is a Community Partner of the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts with a donation of $100,000.

“Prince Edward Island has a very strong curling community and Islanders are extremely supportive of our local athletes and local sporting events,” says Minister of Health and Wellness Carolyn Bertram. “The 2011 Scotties will be a great opportunity for us to witness some of the best curling in the country. Islanders are getting involved through volunteering for the event, and we also hope that many will come out to support Team PEI in these competitions.”

The Scotties Tournament of Hearts has an average television audience of nearly 500,000 viewers daily. The 2010 Scotties final between Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones and Prince Edward Island’s Kathy O’Rourke reached an audience of approximately 1.2 million.

“We are extremely pleased the province has come on board to support this prestigious championship,” said Kim Dolan, host chair of the 2011 Scotties. “We expect a great crowd and great games throughout the week.”

The 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts is February 19-27, 2011, in Charlottetown.
