Dolan, Butler foursomes win opening PEI Scotties games (Guardian)

CORNWALL — Kim Dolan of Charlottetown and Donna Butler of Cornwall won the opening games Thursday night at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s curling championship.

Dolan scored two three-enders to beat Tammy Dewar of Montague 8-3.

It was a tight game, with Dewar’s rink in a 2-0 lead after the fourth end.

“We stuck it out,” said Dolan, an eight-time champion. “It was a little bit of a slow start but we picked it up. We ended up getting two three-enders so that really made a difference. We just had to settle in.”

In the other opening-draw game, Butler edged provincial senior champion Shirley Berry, representing the Cornwall and Charlottetown clubs, 7-6.

After Berry scored three in the seventh end to make it 5-5, Butler scored a deuce in the eighth and held Berry to a single in the ninth end for the victory.

“It was a really close game,”?said Butler. “We had an early lead and then lost three in the seventh.

“It was a good game. It was a great game. They played great and so did my teammates.”
