Cathy O gets her satisfaction (Calgary Herald column)

(by Al Cameron)

CHARLOTTETOWN — The face told you everything you needed to know. Relief. Happiness. Satisfaction.
Not Cathy Overton-Clapham’s face. Instead, it was TSN curling producer Scott Higgins’ face.
He had reason to celebrate Wednesday night at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. The game TSN, like the rest of us enlightened souls on the media bench, had been hyping for a week actually, for a pleasant change, lived up to the advance billing.
And as much as tonight’s loser Jennifer Jones attempted to sugarcoat things by suggesting that “it was just like playing any other skip. It felt like a game at the Scotties when it’s Wednesday night and people are trying to get into the playoffs,” it was anything but.
There were three other games going on tonight, and I’m positive I couldn’t tell you a single thing about them. Neither could the couple thousand fans who were in the building.
Give all the credit in the world to Cathy Overton-Clapham — she saved her finest performance of the week for the team that dumped her last April. And they knew it was coming, too.
Like she’s been doing all week, Overton-Clapham carried her team tonight, and it was acknowledged by the crowd and a good chunk of her peers, who hung around at ice level after their own games were done to watch Manitoba finish it out.
It was fun — by far the most interesting round-robin game I’ve ever seen at the Scotties.
