Youth Olympic Dreams: Trips, training and curling camp (Emily Gray)

(Emily Gray is from PEI, and will be competing in the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria, January 13-22, 2012. This story is reprinted from the CCA website).

Since my last post, I have come home from the trip of a lifetime! My trip to Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii was absolutely amazing.

Emily and the Sydney Harbour Opera House and Bridge

I had the time of my life, and absolutely fell in love with Sydney and am even considering doing a semester or two of university in that fabulous city.  That is, of course, if I can find a curling club somewhere over there!

My training is going great as well. I have just recently completed my six-week program, and am very excited to start my eight-week. I am going to try to take it easy at the Whitecap Curling Academy, but I’m ready to jump into some more intense pre-season training.

This is my third year in attendance at Whitecap, which is held at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I know from experience how exhausting it will be. And with Helen [Radford] pulling us out of sessions to work together as a team, I can tell I am going to be just as exhausted as I have been every other year. Thankfully, the four-hour car drive home after it is all done gives me a little bit of time to catch up on my sleep. I will be jumping right into my midget softball provincials as soon as I get home, so I will need the few extra hours of rest.

Training, even on holiday. (Photo courtesy of E. Gray)

Helen recently gave my teammates and me our fall schedules, and it looks as if we are going to be busy. Along with our own provincial teams’ schedules, we will be traveling to Vancouver, BC, in October, and competing in Ottawa, Ontario, and Brandon, Manitoba, in November. I am really excited to compete in Ottawa because not only is it our first time really competing as Team Canada, but some of my family from Belleville, Ontario, will be coming to watch me curl. My own family is going to drive to Ottawa from PEI to watch. It is going to be so exciting to curl in front of all of them, making them proud. Hopefully by then we will have some Team Canada clothing, so it will make my family that much more proud.

So the team is now together for a week at the Whitecap Curling Academy.  Since this is my third year, not only do I know what to expect, but I also know a lot of the returning curlers.  Being with the team again is going great!  We spent a ‘chill’ day at the Halifax Waterfront the day before Whitecap.  It was really nice to just hang out and do something with each other besides curling.  I know I love curling, but sometimes it’s nice to just step back and relax with the team.

At Whitecap we will not only be competing as a team, but we will also be competing in other ways: our colour groups compete against each other in things like a cheer, banner making and the most famous Great Shootout.  I have yet to tell the team exactly what the Great Shootout is, so I hope they can yell loud!

Curl Moncton to host Senior Curling Fall Tune up

Event: Senior Curling Fall Tune up

Location: Curl Moncton (Beausejour and Beaver ice sheds)

Dates: Saturday and Sunday November 26th and 27th

Entry fee: $ 300

Games: 2 games each day; first draw Saturday approx 1.00 p.m., last draw on Sunday approx 1.30 p.m.

Format: round robin, 8 end games

Prizes: $ win per game

Eligibility: senior men and women (full senior teams preferred but at the discretion of the Committee one player per team may be a few years shy of senior eligibility)

Our goal is to provide senior teams with an interesting competition, high quality ice conditions and a great social experience. We hope to receive entries from 10 teams. Curl Moncton is hosting a recreational mixed spiel that same weekend. Our plan is to alternate draws with the mixed event. Having the 2 events scheduled that weekend will help the Club provide an attractive atmosphere.

Another goal for this spiel is to use this Curling Tune up as a step in developing more interest in senior curling challenge tournaments. Looking ahead to 2012, it is hoped that a second 2 day weekend event could be added. A second event could be spaced with a few weekends gap from the first date; and either be hosted by Curl Moncton or partner with another curling club for hosting of the second event.

Please send entries and cheques by mail to:

Teams set for September Curl Atlantic Ch’ship (updated)

Curl Atlantic
The top teams from last season’s Atlantic Canada provincial men’s and women’s championships will be competing next month at the first annual Curl Atlantic Championship, September 23-26, on arena ice at the Tantramar Veterans Civic Centre in Sackville, New Brunswick. This event was created to better prepare the Atlantic provinces’ high performance curling teams to compete on the national and international stage. The winning men’s team will have the opportunity to participate in the Perth Masters from January 5-8, 2012 in Perth, Scotland, while the women’s winner will earn the right to compete in the International Bernese Ladies Cup from January 13-15, 2012 in Berne, Switzerland.

Three men’s and three women’s teams were to be chosen from each of the four Atlantic Provinces, although, due to team lineup changes, only two men’s and two women’s teams are entered from PEI, and just one men’s and one women’s teams are competing from Newfoundland and Labrador. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick rinks will round out the rosters.

The PEI Men’s rinks are skipped by reigning PEI mixed and six-time PEI junior champion and world junior silver medallist Brett Gallant, along with two-time Canadian mixed and eight-time PEI Tankard champion Robert Campbell. The Gallant rink also includes last year’s men’s Tankard-winning skip Eddie MacKenzie at third, along with Gallant’s former junior teammates Anson Carmody and Alex MacFadyen at second and lead, respectively. The Campbell foursome includes Philip Gorveatt, Eric Brodersen, and Mike Dillon.

Reigning PEI Scotties and former world junior champ Suzanne Birt, along with eight time PEI Scotties winner Kim Dolan are the PEI women’s skips. Other members of the Birt rink are Shelly Bradley, Robyn MacPhee, and Leslie MacDougall, while Rebecca Jean MacDonald, Sinead Dolan, and Nancy Cameron, with alternate Michala Robison round out the Dolan foursome.

Other PEI connections include Robbie Doherty, who was on Campbell’s most recent Canadian Mixed team, and is playing second on the Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc foursome from Nova Scotia, along with Spencer Wicks, lead on the Colin Thomas team from Newfoundland and Labrador and the grandson of Gordon and Wilna Yeo of Summerside.

Rosters for all teams are below.

Both the men’s and women’s divisions will have two pools of six teams, and play a round robin format, with five games guaranteed. Eight end round robin games go Sept. 23-25, with draws at 8 am, 12 noon, and 4 and 8 pm.

Crossover semi-final games take place on Monday Sept. 26 at 9 am, followed by the finals at 2 pm. Monday’s games are 10 ends.

Head CCA Ice Technician Jamie Bourassa will be installing and maintaining the ice throughout the event, and the Nova Scotia Curling Association high performance rocks will be used. The championship is open to any team not receiving financial funding from Sport Canada, the Canadian Curling Association or Own The Podium. A point system (30 points for 1st, 20 for 2nd, 10 for 3rd, 5 for participating) based on provincial championship results will be used this season to determine next year’s entries.

Aug. 15 is entry deadline for 10th Anniversary Rodd Cashspiel

The 2011 Rodd Curling Classic Cashspiel goes November 3-6 at the Charlottetown Curling Club. This marks the 10th year of Rodd Hotels and Resorts sponsorship of this major event on the Atlantic Curling Tour (ACT).

Last year, PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke rink fought back from a 4-0 deficit to edge the Suzanne Birt foursome 6-5 in the women’s final, while the men’s final also featured two PEI teams, and was also won by a 6-5 score, but went an extra end, with the Robert Campbell team beating the Peter Gallant rink by a measure.

This year’s men’s event will be an 18 team round-robin event. The entry fee is $800 (plus $56 ACT fees). The round-robin format will have 6 teams per division, with the top two teams from each division qualifying with the following purse:

1st $5000, 2nd $3500, 3rd & 4th $2500, 5th – 6th $1600

The women’s event will remain a 12 team round-robin. The round-robin format will have 6 teams per division, with the top two teams from each division qualifying. The entry fee will be $600, with the following purse:

1st $3100, 2nd 2100, 3rd & 4th $1250, plus $40 pay/win for the round-robin

The host hotel is the Rodd Charlottetown where a block of rooms has been reserved for the event at a reduced rate. The hospitality room will also be located at the hotel. Rodd Hotels and Resorts has been the sponsor of this event for 10 years and the organizers urge all participants who require lodging to support the Rodd Charlottetown. Teams with booked rooms will be given priority in the event of over-subscription.

The Rodd Charlottetown rate is $98 per room per night and the Rodd Royalty is also offering a reduced rate of $101 which includes continental breakfast.

For reservations call 1-800-565-7633 or 902-894-7371 before August 31st to receive the discount rate.

Here is information on an upcoming Level 3 Technical Workshop to be held in Moncton in September. Note that the PEICA will not be holding a Level 3 Tech on PEI this year as the Maritime curling associations have been rotating this workshop to each of the 3 Maritime provinces for the past number of years. As it stands at the moment, this will be the last season the (Old) Level 3 Technical will be offered – the (New) Competition Development Coach is being piloted this season and will replace the old Level 3 Tech next year. It will then be offered on a regional basis, be considerably more comprehensive and will take a projected 18 -24 months to complete all components.

This is a great opportunity to get your Level 3 Technical and work towards becoming fully Certified 3. If you are interested in attending the workshop please see below for the details on deadlines, cost and registration info, If you signup, please let Gayle Johnston, PEICA Technical Director know at [email protected] or 902.368-1071, as PEI attendees may be eligible for some financial assistance through the Amateur Sport Support Program.
