Brett Gallant advances to quarter-finals at Casino Lac-Leamy Challenge spiel

PEI’s Brett Gallant rink, which includes Eddie MacKenzie at third, second Anson Carmody, and lead Alex MacFadyen, lost their Saturday morning game against the St. John’s team skipped by Brad Gushue, with Gallant’s former teammate Adam Casey at lead, but recovered nicely, picking up wins in their final two triple-knockout games to grab a spot in this morning’s 9:30 Atlantic quarter-final round at the Casino Lac-Leamy Challenge Spiel in Gatineau Quebec.

The Gushue rink beat them 7-1, following a fourth end deuce with steals of one and three to put the game out of reach for the Island squad. This was Gallant’s second loss in the event, after coming out on the wrong side of an 8-7 extra-end decision to Quebec’s Robert Desjardins rink on Friday, so the Gallant foursome then moved into the “must win” C division of the draw, where they stole a deuce in the final end of an 8-5 win over Mark Bice of Sarnia, and doubled Martin Ferland of Quebec City 4-2 to advance to the money round.

This morning’s quarters see Gallant take on Mark Keen of Toronto, Gushue against Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Desjardins vs Rob Rumfeldt of Guelph, and Jean-Michel Menard of Gatineau against Pierre Charette of Saguenay Quebec.

The semi-finals go at 12:30 Atlantic, with the finals at 4 pm ADT.

All playoff teams will receive a purse of at least $ 3000 out of a total purse of $36,500 in this World Curling Tour event.
