The official announcement that the Credit Union Place in Summerside is hosting the GP Car and Home Players’ Championship, the season’s final event in the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling, from April 10 to 15, is expected tomorrow. Summerside’s Credit Union Place has called a news conference for 11 am on Wednesday, and City councillor Peter Holman confirmed last night at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony that the announcement is for a curling event. J.P. Desrosiers, the City’s Event Development Manager, said in late August that the event is confirmed, and, at that time, only the details had to be worked out. Summerside has now been added to the Grand Slam website  (http://www.grandslamofcurling.com/players-championship/) as the location for the event, one of the four men’s majors that culminates the World Curling Tour season, and which will also feature a separate women’s draw. Both draws will feature the world’s top 8 ranked teams from the 2011-12 season competing for Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) points, as well as their share of a $100,000 total purse. Last year’s winners were Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, and Kevin Martin of Edmonton.

The other events in the Grand Slam are the GP Car and Home World Cup of Curling, Nov. 2-6 in Sault Ste. Mariie Ontario, the BDO Canadian Open, Dec. 14-18 in Kingston Ont., and the Swiss Chalet National, Jan. 25-29 in Dawson Creek BC. Tickets for these three events are already on sale, and information on ticket sales for the Summerside event is expected at the official announcement.
