MacDonald beats Gaudet to join Gallant in Hub City playoffs, Birt 3-0 on women’s side

Going into the 7:30 pm Saturday night draw, five of the eight men’s qualifiers out of the 24 teams entered have now been determined for the Sunday quarter-final round at the Hub City Shootout Atlantic Curling Tour event in Moncton. PEI’s Brett Gallant, along with Moncton’s Terry Odishaw, went undefeated in the A section of the triple knockout event to grab the first two spots on Friday. In the B section, qualifier number three was won by New Brunswick’s Jason Vaughan, who defeated PEI’s Robert Shaw rink 6-4 on Saturday, while Rod MacDonald beat Mike Gaudet 6-2 in a battle of Summerside skips to take slot number four. Down in the sudden death C division, John Luckhurst beat fellow Nova Scotian Rob Harris to take qualifier number five. Paul Dobson (NB) is playing Shaw in qualifer six, with New Brunswick teams Jeremy Mallais and James Grattan playing for slot seven, and Marc Lecocq of NB playing Gaudet for the final qualifier.

The quarter-finals go at 9 on Sunday, with the semis at noon, and the final at 3.

In the eight team two pool round robin women’s section, PEI’s Suzanne Birt, and Andrea Kelley of New Brunswick lead the pools, with 3-0 records. Meaghan Hughes of PEI is 1-2, while the other PEI rink, skipped by Donna Butler is 0-3. The top two teams out of the round robin, which includes three pool games and two crossovers for each team, advance to the noon Sunday final.
