O’LEARY – It might not have been his preferred route, but skip Mel Bernard liked the destination.
Bernard and his Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club team of Ted MacFadyen, Lou Nowlan and Earle Proud lost their first game in the 2012 Medicine Shoppe P.E.I. provincial men’s masters (60 years and older) curling championship at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary on Monday. Then they won four straight to repeat as provincial champions.
Three of their wins came Wednesday, the final day of the seven-team men’s double-knockout competition. They started the day off with a 7-2 win over the 2010 champion and previously unbeaten Clair Sweet rink from the host club. They ended the run of Fred Fall’s Crapaud team with a 6-2 decision in the afternoon, and finished off the field with a 7-4 victory over the Sweet foursome in the evening draw.
“I don’t like doing that,” said Bernard of starting the championship with a loss. “It’s almost like you have to play with a little fear.
“You have to get into it. After that it’s one shot at a time.”
