Finalists set for PEI Senior Men’s

The three finalists are now determined for the Monday championship round at the Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The Mel Bernard foursome from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside won the C flight in the triple knockout event tonight, stealing the last three ends to edge the Bill Hope foursome from the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs by a 7-6 score in the C final.  Other members of the Bernard team are Ted MacFadyen, Lou Nowlan, and Earle Proude.

The B section finalists were decided Saturday afternoon, with the Charlottetown and Montague rink of Rod MacDonald, John Likely, George Koke and Doug MacGregor coming from behind to score five points in the last three ends to beat the Blair Jay team from the Silver Fox by a 9-5 score in the B final. Charlottetown’s Charlie Wilkinson team, which includes Ken McGregor, Phillip McInnis and Bill Doherty, captured the A section on Friday night in a high-scoring game that included a five ender by Wilkinson, and ending with 13-8 decision over the Clair Sweet team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

The Rod MacDonald rink will now take on the Mel Bernard team in the first game of the championship round, Monday at 1 pm, with the winner taking on Charlie Wilkinson in the final at 6 pm. The winner will advance to the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Nine teams took part in the PEI Senior Men’s championship, for curlers age 50 and over. The Senior Women’s event, with eight teams, starts Friday morning.
