The Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall and Charlottetown curling clubs captured the A flight of the triple knockout Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Women’s Championships Saturday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, beating the Paula Baglole team from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside by a 10-7 score. The Berry foursome, which includes third Sandy Hope, second Shelley Ebbett, and lead Arleen Harris, with coaches Bill Hope and Butch McGee, were trailing 5-2 after four ends, after Baglole stole the first end and a deuce in the second. The teams traded deuces in ends three and four, but Berry took eight points in the next four ends, following a deuce with a stolen single, triple, and deuce to lead 10-5 after eight. Baglole, whose team includes Debbie MacMurdo, Heather Bernard, and Norma Schurman, took a pair in nine, but ran out of rocks in the 10th.

Berry then picked up another come-from-behind win, 7-5 win over Cornwall clubmate Debbie Rhodenizer, in the evening draw, while Baglole lost 10-4 to June Moyaert of Montague, who picked up a five-ender in the fifth, and is now at 3-1.

Berry, who is the current Masters (age 60+) champion and a four time Seniors (50+) champ, now advances to the B final at 11 this morning, against defending champion Moyaert, who is also won the PEI women’s title back in 1988 with her second, Terri Thompson, as skip. Third Sherren MacKinnon and lead Kathy Clarey complete Moyaert’s Seniors rink.

The C semi-finals go this afternoon at 4, with Berry facing the winner of an 11 am game between Baglole and Cornwall’s Karen Currie, and Moyaert taking on the winner of this morning’s contest between Rhodenizer, and Sharon Horne from the host club. The winners of the C semis advance to the C final, Monday morning at 9.

The A, B, and C section winners than play off in the two game championship round, Monday at 3 pm and, if necessary, Tuesday at 2 pm. If a team wins two of the triple knockout sections, they will play in both championship games, and take the title if they win either. If Berry were to win all three sections, the championship round would not be required.

The Senior Women’s champions will join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.
