Overton-Clapham perfect, Howard scores 4 in last end to beat Gushue at curling grand slam (Postmedia)

(Postmedia News) Cathy Overton-Clapham won twice on Wednesday and sits alone in first place in the women’s standings at the Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship in Summerside, P.E.I.

The skip from Winnipeg has a 3-0 record at the final leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling after wins over Heather Nedohin and Sherry Middaugh.

Overton-Clapham scored three in the sixth in a 7-3 win over Nedohin, the 2012 Canadian champion from Edmonton. The Winnipeg skip followed that up with a 6-5 win over Middaugh, of Coldwater, Ont. Overton-Clapham stole the winning point in the eighth end.

Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon is close behind at 2-0 after beating Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 7-6.

On the men’s side, Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Kevin Martin of Edmonton and John Epping of Toronto share the early lead at 1-0.

Howard, the 2012 Canadian and world champion, scored four in the eighth to beat Brad Gushue of St. John’s 10-7 in a back-and-forth game. Martin, the two-time defending bonspiel champion, beat Calgary’s Kevin Koe 6-4. Epping doubled up Asham World Curling Tour money leader Mike McEwen of Winnipeg 8-4.
