Round robin play wrapped up Sunday night at the Curl Atlantic Championship being played at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre in Sackville NB, with the top two teams from each of the two pools in the men’s and the women’s divisions advancing to their respective semi-finals at 9 am Monday. Two PEI rinks, skipped by Eddie MacKenzie, and defending women’s champ Suzanne Birt are in the semis, after finishing the round robin with 4-1 win-loss records.
MacKenzie, whose team includes third Anson Carmody, second Christian Tolusso, and lead Alex MacFadyen, will face the Marc leCocq from New Brunswick in one men’s semi, while two Nova Scotia rinks, skipped by Jamie Murphy and Paul Flemming, will play in the other. All four teams had 4-1 round robin records. MacKenzie’s only round robin loss was in his opener, a close 7-6 extra-end battle.
The Birt rink includes third Shelly Bradley, second Sarah Fullerton, and lead Leslie MacDougall, and will play the undefeated Sylvie Robichaud foursome in one women’s semi-final, while Kelly MacIntosh of Nova Scotia and Stacie Devereaux of Newfoundland and Labrador, both 4-1, will square off in the other. Birt’s only loss was to MacIntosh, by a 5-4 score.
The other PEI rink in the event, skipped by Kathy O’Rourke, returning to competitive play after a year off, finished play with a 1-4 record.
The men’s and women’s finals go at 1:30 pm on Monday. 12 of the top men’s and an equal number of the top women’s teams from across Atlantic Canada took part in this second annual event, designed to give Atlantic curlers experience with playing on arena ice, and featuring cash prizes of $3000 for the men’s and women’s winners, $2000 for the runners-up, and $1000 for the remaining semi-finalists.
