MacLean siblings skipping teams in the JSI-OVCA Superspiel in Ottawa area this weekend

Two teams from PEI are entered in the 2012 JSI – OVCA Junior SuperSpiel, which got underway today and wraps up on Sunday at the Ottawa, Granite, Carleton Heights, City View, Navy and Manotick Curling Clubs in the Ottawa area, Finals are at Carleton Heights on Sunday at 4:00pm ET.  The Island rinks are skipped by siblings Matthew and Amanda MacLean from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary..

Last year’s winning skips – Hannah Fleming of Scotland and Brennan Wark of Thunder Bay are back this year.  Following their wins in Ottawa, Fleming went on to become World Junior Curling Champion and Wark finished as Runner-Up at the Canadian Junior Nationals, losing a tight final to eventual World Junior Curling Champion, Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton.
This year’s event includes international teams from Scotland, Switzerland and the USA, as well as every province east from Manitoba to Newfoundland.  Fleming and Ward will be challenged from teams that finished in the top of the field at the 2012 and 2011 Canadian Junior Championships, Optimist U18 Championships, Atlantic U18 Championships as well as the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

The draw is a triple knockout format with four games guaranteed. All but two teams will play a minimum of five games.

The Amanda MacLean rink won their opener, 4-3 in an extra end this morning, over current Ontario Junior Curling Tour leaders, the Lauren Horton team.
