Curl Atlantic has awarded Charlottetown its premiere regional curling event – the Curl Atlantic Championship – for the next three years, beginning in 2013, marking the first time the provincial capital has partnered with the regional curling association.
“Curl Atlantic is thrilled to partner with the City of Charlottetown and the CARI Complex to bring our premiere high performance event, the Curl Atlantic Championship, to Charlottetown for the next three years,” said Helen Radford, Executive Director of Curl Atlantic. “We are excited to showcase Atlantic Canada’s best talent and look forward to seeing everyone in PEI this September.”
The highly competitive event is comprised of twelve men’s teams and twelve women’s teams vying for their respective divisional titles. Both the men’s and women’s divisions will have two pools of six teams and a round-robin style prior to playoff rounds. The three year partnership also includes the CARI Complex as the host venue for the event. The 2013 Curl Atlantic Championship will take place September 12th – 15th.
“The City of Charlottetown is honoured that Atlantic Canada’s premier curling championship will be held in the Capital City for the next three years,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “This is good news for our tourism sector and will have a positive economic impact. We’re excited to have this opportunity to partner with the CARI Complex on hosting this event and we’re also pleased that our sport tourism brand SCORE! was able to work with CARI to close this deal and bring this event to our great City.”
In addition to competition, the event will also include Ice Technical Courses taught by a certified national and international curling ice maker to teach arena ice technicians how to make and maintain curling ice. The 2013 Ice Technical Course will be held at the CARI Complex as part of the Championship from September 9th to 11th.
“ Curl PEI is delighted with today’s announcement that Charlottetown will host the Curl Atlantic Championship over the next three years, as this event is an excellent opportunity for curling athletes to compete at a high level on arena ice conditions,” said Curl PEI President George Koke. “Experience like this is crucial in preparing for national events like the Scotties and the Brier.  Everyone in the curling community will benefit from this event, curlers, ice technicians, officials and fans. Charlottetown, as always, will be an excellent host and the CARI Complex will be an outstanding facility. It will be very exciting!”
More information on the 2013 Curl Atlantic Championship and the Ice Technical Course will be issued at a later date.
