Summerside’s Justin Campbell and Jenny McLean rinks both 4-0 at O’Connor Glass Under 18 Ch’ships

The Justin Campbell and Jenny McLean rinks from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside remain undefeated, with 4-0 win-loss records at the O’Connor Glass/Curl PEI Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships, being played at the Montague Curling Club.

In U18 men’s play today, Campbell, and his rink of Jordan MacLean, Ben Gardiner, and Brett Murphy, edged the Tony Nabuurs team, with players from the Charlottetown, Montague and Maple Leaf clubs by a 6-5 score, and got by the Alex MacFadyen foursome from the Fox by a 5-4 count..

McLean, playing with Lauren MacFadyen, Ava Whitney-Coulter, and Emily Vaniderstine, took only six ends to blank the Emily Keen rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Cornwall Curling Club 9-0, and, aided by a four point fourth end, beat the Heather Drake team from the host club by a 7-4 score in the U18 women’s division.

The Tyler Smith rink from Montague and Crapaud is 3-1 in the men’s section, followed by MacFadyen and Nabuurs at 2-2. Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe is 1-3, while Montague’s Owen Collier is 0-4.

In the women’s section, Keen is at 2-2, while Drake and Cornwall’s Rachel O’Connor are 1-3.

Round robin play continues Saturday with draws at 10 am and 2 and 7 pm.  Semi-finals and finals take place on Sunday.

The winning rinks  advance to their choice of either the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships, March 28-31 at the Caribou Curling Club in Stephenville NL, OR the Optimist International Under 18 Curling Championships, March 27-31 in Surrey and Langley BC, with the runners-up going to the other event. Starting last year, the option to attend the Optimist rotates annually between the four Atlantic Provinces – 2013 is PEI’s turn.

Six men’s and 4 women’s teams are taking part in the PEI event.
