The PEI provincial curling championship season is still in full swing, with the O’Connor Glass/Curl PEI Under 18 championships wrapping up on Sunday, while the Curl PEI Provincial Mixed, and the O’Connor Glass/Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 championships get underway on Thursday, and conclude on Monday, March 4th.
Curl PEI Provincial Mixed
The Montague Curling Club is the site for the 2013 Curl PEI Provincial Mixed Curling Championship, from February 28 to March 4. Ten teams from 4 PEI curling clubs have signed up for this triple knockout event with a Page championship round. In last year’s final, Charlottetown’s Robert Campbell foursome defeated Montague’s Larry Richards team by a 9-3 score to win the event. Richards is back this year, but two-time Canadian Mixed champ Campbell is not entered.
Mixed curling has two male and two female players on each team, with the genders alternate positions in the delivery rotation. There must always be four players on the ice during a game.
Opening draws go Thursday at 1:30 and 6:30 pm, with Friday draws at the same times, and Saturday and Sunday games at 10 am and 3 pm. The first of four qualifiers to advance to the Page championship round will be chosen in the 10 am Saturday draw, with the second qualifier selected in the 3 pm draw, and the third and fourth qualifiers advancing from the 10 am Sunday draw. The Page round at 3 pm Sunday will see the first two qualifiers square off in the Page 1-2 game, with the winner advancing directly to Monday’s 3 pm semi-final, and the loser playing in the 10 am Monday semi-final. The winner of the Page 3-4 game, also at 3 pm Sunday, will also advance to the semi-final, with the winner of the semi going to the final.
The PEI Mixed champion will advance to the Canadian Mixed, November 14-23 at the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa.

O’Connor Glass / Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 Championships
The Crapaud Community Curling Club will again this year be the host for the O’Connor Glass/Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 (formerly known as the 15 and Under) Curling Championships, with separate divisions for male and female curlers, under the age of 16. Last year’s champions were the Tyler Smith and Jenny McLean rinks. Smith, this year’s Under 21 champ, who is also in the Under 18, is entered in this event (with a different team), while McLean, who is competing in the Under 18, is not in this event, so there will be a new girl’s champion. This year’s Under 16 is scheduled for Feb. 28 to March 4, with 8 male and 6 female teams signed up.
The U16 Boys division will play a triple Knockout Draw with a Page Championship round, while the U16 Girls will play a round robin format, with the 2nd & 3rd place teams advancing to a semi-final, and the winner of the semi playing the first place team in the final.
