The Gordon MacFadyen rink from the Summerside Fire Department are still looking for their first win after day two play at the 54th Canadian Firefighters Curling Championship, at the Thistle-St. Andrew’s curling club in Saint John New Brunswick.
The four-time PEI champions lost their opener on Saturday, 9-5 to defending champion Jeff Zechner and his Northern Ontario team from the Nipigon Fire Dept. On Sunday, the MacFadyen team lost a close game to Edmonton’s Aaron Bartling foursome, 9-8 in an extra end. PEI led 8-5 after 7 ends, but Alberta took a single in eight, and stole single points in ends nine, ten, and the extra, to pull out the win. The Island squad then faced a strong Saskatchewan team, skipped by Gregg Tarasoff, giving up a triple and two four ends en route to a 12-6 loss. The MacFadyen rink, which includes third Leo Stewart, second Jim Arsenault, and lead Jason Cameron, takes on the Northwest Territories and Nova Scotia on Monday.
Three teams – British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Southern Ontario are still unbeaten at 2-0, while New Brunswick, Northern Ontario, and Saskatchewan are 2-1. Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec sit at 1-2, while NWT and PEI are 0-3. The finals are Saturday at 1 pm.
