MacDonald, Birt score victories on opening day (Guardian)

Rod MacDonald and Suzanne Birt opened the Curl Atlantic Championship with wins Thursday in Charlottetown.

There are 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams competing at the MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown. Games are eight ends.

MacDonald defeated Zach?Eldridge 6-5 after scoring four in the third end. MacDonald added singles in the fifth and the eighth  end.

Eldridge’s New Brunswick rink scored a deuce in the first and singles in the fourth, sixth and seventh ends.

Birt led Beth Hamilton 5-0 after two en route to an 8-4 victory in her opener.

Action continues today with draws at 8 a.m., noon, 4 and 8:30 p.m.
