New Brunswick, Manitoba rinks win Junior Superspiel, Doering rink with Chris Gallant goes home with $1100

The Rene Comeau rink from New Brunswick won the men’s, while the Kendall Haymes rink from Ontario captured the women’s divisions of the 20th annual JSI OVCA Junior Superspiel, which wrapped up this evening in Ottawa. Comeau beat reigning Canadian Junior Champion and World Bronze Medallist Matt Dunstone of Manitoba 6-4 in the final, while Haymes downed Shannon Birchard from Manitoba 8-2.
The Kyle Doering rink from Manitoba, which includes Stratford PEI native Chris Gallant, who is currently attending school in Winnipeg, lost out to Dunstone in this afternoon’s semi-finals, by a 5-4 score, when Dunstone scored a deuce in the final end to pull out the win. This morning, the Doering team beat the defending champion Scot Babin rink from Nova Scotia by a 5-1 score to advance to the semi. Comeau edged Colton Daley from the Ottawa area 7-6 in the other semi.

In the women’s division, Cornwall PEI’s Veronica Smith team finished play Saturday night with a 3-3 win-loss record, and did not advance to the quarter-final round.

The winning Comeau and Haymes rinks took home $3300 each, with the runner-up Dunstone and Birchard teams pocketing $1800. Doering and the other non-advancing semi-finalist teams received $1100 each.
