Off-Island teams take top spots at Fall Fling (Journal Pioneer)

SUMMERSIDE — Island teams made it to the finals of this weekend’s annual Fall Fling junior curling cash spiel at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, but neither was able to take the top spot.

On the women’s side, the Justine Comeau team, from the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton, N.B., bested the Amanda MacLean foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club, by a score of 9-3, with MacLean conceding after seven ends.

Comeau, 15, enjoyed the spiel and felt it was a great one to participate in.

“We had quite a few breaks in the sixth end. We had to put our rocks in the right place. We were able to pull it off,” Comeau said of the championship match.

On the junior men’s side, Graeme Weagle, with third Jeffery Meagher, second Scott Weagle and lead Max Kessler, from the Chester Curling Club in Chester, N.S., came from behind for an 8-4 victory over Matthew MacLean and his team of Alan MacLean, Shawn Pitre and Noah O’Connor from the Cornwall Curling Club.

“We didn’t expect much, because we are 13-14 (year-olds) and playing under 21. But we did great. We held it together,” Weagle reflected on his win.

“The competition was just great. (There are) some of the best teams in the Atlantic Provinces. It’s great to be able to play against them,” he added.
