MacKay, Keen pick up Future Scotties wins, Scotties final playoff spot on the line at 2 pm

The second of three draws for the Future Scotties developmental event for junior curlers who may one day compete in the PEI Scotties was held this morning, with Kaleigh MacKay and her Montague/Crapaud team beating Cornwall’s Meghan Ching rink 5-1, and Cornwall’s Emily Keen foursome stealing a triple in the 6th end in an 8-1 decision over Lauren Moerike from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex. Their final draw takes place Sunday at 10.

The third and final playoff spot in the Scotties will be determined with the 2 pm draw this afternoon, when Kim Dolan takes on Charlottetown clubmate Lisa Jackson. The other game sees Shirley Berry from Cornwall and the Silver Fox, who has already secured a spot in the semi-finals, take on defending champion Suzanne Birt from the host club, who wiill not advance to the playoffs.

Berry and the winner of the Dolan/Jackson game will square off in the 7 pm semi-finals, with the winner facing unbeaten Kathy O’Rourke in the 2 pm Sunday final. The PEI Scotties champion will advance to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, February 1-9 at the Maurice Richard Arena, Montreal, QC.
