Three leaders of sport will be in the spotlight April 11 when Sport PEI announces the winner of the prestigious ADL Volunteer Administrator of the Year award at its annual banquet in Charlottetown.

Derek MacEwen (curling), Stephen Murray (rowing), and Gordon Rogers (speed skating) have been named as finalists for this award, which recognizes the dedication and organizing abilities of individuals in sport.

Derek MacEwen (Curling)

Stratford’s Derek MacEwen is a long-time curling volunteer, most notably with the Cornwall club, and through his work on the Curl PEI website.

MacEwen’s work on the site has made it one of the very best sites for curling information in the country, serving the Island community with not just the latest home news but from around the country, and internationally. As soon as a championship is over, results and photos are on-line and social media is updated with the latest happenings. In addition to the main site, Derek also produces individual sites for the individual Curl PEI championships, as well as the Cornwall Curling Club.

A past-president at Cornwall, Derek is a dedicated volunteer in numerous capacities, whether it is drawmaster for the Wednesday Ladder league, running bonspiels, or serving on the board. He is a great asset to the sport in the province, and last summer was recognized with a Canadian Curling Association Volunteer of the Week award.

Stephen Murray (Rowing)

Prior to 2009 it would have been impossible to find any rowing in the province, but thanks to the efforts of Charlottetown’s Stephen Murray, the sport is thriving.

Networking with key Rowing Canada officials to obtain starter kits following the 2009 Canada Games, Murray and a few key volunteers set up home at the Charlottetown Yacht Club, offering Learn to Row programs that saw membership began to grow.

As well as spending hours in the water teaching and coaching, Stephen maintained the boats, arranged storage, and wore numerous hats both in the boats and in the boardroom as association president, where his efforts saw a steady increase in participants.

In 2013 rowing sent a team of 10 to the Sherbrooke Canada Games, the association has grown its number of boats, and the sport is proving to be extremely popular with participants of all ages and abilities.

Gordon Rogers (Speed Skating)

Speed skating in the province has been blessed with many fine administrators, and Charlottetown’s Gordon Rogers has done an outstanding job in his seven-year tenure as treasurer.

In addition to all the financials, Gordon takes on numerous other administrative roles including registrar, ice scheduler and overseeing internal communications for members.

He coordinates the annual awards banquet, provides assistance to the Canada Games program, and also takes on duties as a meet recorder or coordinator for the major events, as well as liaising with Speed Skate New Brunswick regarding competition schedules.

Gordon also helps out on the ice as a coach at all levels from Learn to Skate to competitive, and is a key individual in a sport which is doing very well on PEI.
