Epping upsets Olympic champ Jacobs, Gushue beats Martin at Players’ (Grand Slam)

Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs fell 8-5 to Toronto’s John Epping in Draw 5 action at the Players’ Championship Wednesday night in Summerside, P.E.I.

Epping scored a deuce in the fourth to pull ahead 4-3 and stole two in the fifth to gain a three-point advantage. Jacobs clawed back with a double of his own in the sixth and narrowed the gap 6-5 but Epping sealed it with two in the final end.

Jacobs, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Epping both now hold 1-1 records in the Grand Slam of Curling event.

Elsewhere, Brier champion Kevin Koe scored a triple and stole singles twice in a 7-3 victory over Scotland’s David Murdoch. Koe improved to a 2-0 record while Murdoch, who won the silver medal in Sochi, dropped to 0-2.

Glenn Howard, from Penetanguishene, Ont., scored deuces in the first and fourth ends to win 4-3 against Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock. Howard, the defending Players’ champion, is now 1-1 in the tournament while Laycock fell to 0-2.

Sweden’s Niklas Edin scored three in the first and deuces in the third and seventh ends and beat Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton 7-5. Both rinks are now 1-1 at the event.

Brad Gushue, from St. John’s, N.L., topped Edmonton’s Kevin Martin with a 6-4 victory. Gushue broke a 3-3 tie with a single in the fifth and a steal of one in the sixth.
