The Mitchell Schut team from the Cornwall Curling Club went undefeated this weekend at the Montague Curling Club to win the KFC Provincial Under 13 Curling Championship, beating the Alexis Burris rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club by a 5-2 score in this afternoon’s final.

Schut, who also won the event two years ago, and finished third last year, was playing with third Liam Kelly, second Michael MacEwen, and lead stone David Drake, with coach Nancy Yeo. The Schut rink, after finishing first place in their pool, played the second place team in the other pool, another Cornwall rink skipped by Rachel MacLean, in the semi-finals Sunday afternoon, scoring a triple in the final end for a 6-3 win. The Burris team, which includes third Sydney Howatt, second Meghan Sherren, and lead Madelyn Cantwell, with coach Phyllis Stretch, finished second in their pool with a 3-2 win-loss record, and beat the Cruz Pineau rink from the Silver Fox in their semi.

In the final, Burris took a single with hammer in the first end, with Schut hitting for a deuce in the second. Burris was facing three Schut counters in the third end, and hit for a single point to tie the game at 3-3 going into the third end break. Schut drew for a pair in the fourth, and stole a single in the fifth when Burris’ draw was a few inches light. This gave Schut a 5-2 lead coming home, but without last rock advantage. In the final end, the Schut rink hit everything they could, and ran the Burris team out of rocks.

The sportsmanship award, as voted on by the curlers at the event, was won by Montague skip Samuel Shaw (no photo available), while the coaching award, as voted on by the coaches in the event, was won by Phyllis Stretch, coach of the Burris rink.
