Sport Feature

After a busy month of February with Canada Games we are back on track with our Sport Features. For the month of March we are featuring Curling.  This is one of the most vocal sports and you can’t help but be engaged during a great draw.  Thanks to Amy Duncan, Executive Director of Curl PEI,  for giving us insight on curling here in the province.

Tell us about Curl PEI.
Curl PEI is the governing body for curling on PEI.  We have seven curling facilities across PEI from Montague to Alberton and operate provincial championships for curlers of all ages.

When was your sport organization established?
Curling has a long history on PEI, possibly beginning with the arrival of the first Scottish settlers in 1770.  The Prince Edward Island Curling Association (Curl PEI) was incorporated in 1977 however there had been a men’s association since 1934 and women’s association since 1955.

How many members do you have?
1050 curlers in 7 facilities across PEI.

What age can kids start your sport?
6-8 years old, depending on the curling facility.

How can people get started into your sport?
To get started visit RocktheIce.ca – The Rookie’s Guide to Curling on PEI.  Once you have learned the basics, there are a variety of ways to give curling a shot including: ice rentals; learn to curl clinics and leagues; regular leagues; and funspiels.

What is the vision and or mission of your sport?
Curl PEI’s mission is to foster, encourage, promote and administer the development and growth of curling in PEI.

Is there recreation and competitive stream for your sport?
Yes, curling is a fantastic recreational sport that keeps you active the entire game with the options for those who wish to practice and train hard to compete at provincial, regional, national and international events.

Highlights from your sport the last 2 months.

Why should someone join your sport?
Curling – also called “The Roaring Game” – is admittedly a unique sport which resembles a hybrid of shuffleboard  and power sweeping but no matter what the age or skill level, curling is the perfect activity for friends, family, and co-workers to enjoy an hour or two of fun and yelling at the top of their lungs.

How much is it to become a member of your sport organization?
Membership varies depends on your age and which curling facility you join – memberships start at $125.
