Cornwall’s Clarke/Stavert win their 5th women’s Maritime Stick Curling title

The Maritime Stick Curling Championship was held at the Amherst Curling Club March 11-13.
The Maritime Stick Curling Championship format has 4 men’s/open teams and 2 women’s teams from each of the 3 Maritime provinces. The 12 team men’s/open division has two pools with teams playing a 5 game round robin. The top 3 teams make the playoffs . The 6 team women’s division plays a round robin with 4 teams making the playoffs.
In the men’s/open division, the Montague team of Floyd Stewart and Gordon MacDonald won their pool with a 5-0 record but were eliminated in the semi-finals. The Cornwall team of Sterling Stratton and Barry Craswell made the playoffs but were eliminated in the quarter finals. The other PEI men’s/open teams of: Bazil / Sterling Higginbotham (Montague) and Walter Callaghan/Bob Leard (Alberton/Montague) competed well but did not make the playoffs. The men’s/open championship was won by the NS team of John Marshall and Haylett Clarke from New Glasgow.

PEI was represented in the women’s division by the Cornwall teams of Etta Reid/ Myrna Craswell and Gloria Clarke/ Ruth Stavert.  The Reid/ Craswell team were very competitive but did not make the playoffs.  The Clarke/ Stavert team finished the round robin tied for first with a 4-1 record. They won their two playoff games against NB and NS and claimed the Championship. This was the 5th Maritime championship for Gloria and Ruth in the 6 year history of the event.
The 2016 Maritime Stick Curling Championship will be hosted by PEI in March at a site to be determined later. Stick Curling in PEI is sponsored by the Ferguson Logan Funeral Home, Kinkora Enterprises (Maureen Callaghan), and Morley Annear Limited.
