PEI Masters starts this morning

The first draw is at 10 this morning as the 2015-2016 Curl PEI Masters Curling Championships, with Men’s and Women’s divisions for curlers age 60 and over, get underway at the Crapaud Community Curling Club.

Winners and runners-up from the provincial championships will advance to the 2016 Maritime Masters Curling Championships to be held at Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club from March 11 to 13, 2016. The winning rinks, or the runners-up if they don’t choose to attend,  are also invited to participate in the 2016 Kings County Canadian Masters Championships, April 4-10 at the Glooscap Curling Club in Kentville NS and the Wolfville Curling Club.

Defending Island champions are the Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, and the Shirley Berry foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club and the Charlottetown Curling Complex. The Bernard rink is back this year, except for Bernard. with Ted MacFadyen taking over as skip.
Berry is skipping a new team of Val MacLean, Linda Fairhurst, and Hanny MacLeod, while the other members of her team last year are also entered, with Sandy Hope moving up to skip, with Shelley Ebbett at third, and Arleen Harris at lead. Debbie Rhondenhizer joins the rink at second stone. A team skipped by Myrna Sanderson rounds out the all-Cornwall women’s field.
The Clair Sweet team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary were last year’s Men’s runners-up, and are back with their team intact. Other entries in the seven team men’s field are skipped by Paul Arsenault from Cornwall, Blair Jay and Louis Walsh from the Silver Fox, Craig Mackie from Charlottetown, and Dario Zannier from Crapaud.
Play gets underway 10 am this morning, with the men’s division playing a modified triple knockout format, and the women playing a double round robin. The women’s final between the top two teams from the round robin will go Sunday at 2 pm if no tiebreaker is needed, or Monday at 10 am if there is a tiebreaker. If a team wins all three sections of the men’s modified triple knockout draw, there will be no championship round. If not, the two game championship round between the section winners will go Monday at 10 and, if needed, 2 pm. If a team wins two divisions, they will play in both championship games and win the event if they take either, while their opponent would have to win both.
Live end by end results will be available at PEICurling.com
