2 pm PEI Masters Women’s Final set. Men’s could also wrap up this afternoon

The women’s final is set for 2 pm at the Curl PEI Provincial Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60+, at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, with Sandy Hope taking on Myrna Sanderson. The men’s title could be won at 2 pm as well, if Ted MacFadyen wins his game over Craig Mackie.

Hope finished double round robin play in first plaee with a 3-1 win-loss record, and had the morning off, with Sanderson stealing a pair of deuces and a single in ends five through seven to beat defending champion skip Shirley Berry by an 8-3 score in this morning’s final double round robin draw. That gave Sanderson second place, with a 2-2 win-loss record in the three team all-Cornwall women’s event, and advancing her to the 2 pm final. Berry finished at 1-3.

MacFadyen, who is skipping last year’s winning men’s team (replacing Mel Bernard) from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, won both the “A” and “B” sections of the seven team modified triple knockout draw. A win against Charlottetown’s Craig Mackie in the “C” final at 2 pm this afternoon  would give him the title without having to play a championship round.

Mackie edged Summerside’s Louis Walsh 9-8 in an exciting back and forth extra end game this morning to punch his ticket to the C final. Walsh had played MacFadyen in the other two section finals. Mackie took an early 3-0 lead in this morning’s game after two ends, but Walsh fought back with a triple in end three and four points in the 5th to lead 7-5. Mackie scored 1 in six and stole a deuce in seven to regain the lead with an 8-7 score. Walsh forced an extra end with a tying single, but Mackie took one in the extra for the win.

MacFadyen’s 9-5 win this morning over Cornwall’s Paul Arsenault was also a see-saw battle, with MacFadyen scoring three points in the first two ends, but Arsenault pulling ahead with a pair of deuces to lead 4-3 at the fourth end break. MacFadyen took a deuce in five, with Arsenault recording a tying single in six.  MacFadyen took four points in the seventh to gain a big lead coming home, running Arsenault out of rocks.

If Mackie wins this afternoon, he will advance to the two game championship round, at 10 am and 2 pm on Monday. Double section winner MacFadyen would take the championship if he wins either game, while Mackie would have to win both.
